Ageing and Arthritis in Pets

(This is part 5 of an 8-part series on overweight pets from the desk of the Dynavyte Vet.)
The active ingredient in Dynavyte Pets MBS is Bacillus subtilis (Natto). This probiotic spore has a proven history when it comes to arthritis.

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints that includes the cartilage lining the joint surface. Arthritis also affects the tissues surrounding the joints. Weight gain can increase the pressure on joints and their surrounding structures and contribute to arthritis as pets age.

Additionally, as outlined in previous parts to this series, obesity causes inflammation in many parts of the body.

Joint pain has been found to interfere with sleep and losing weight has been seen to improve sleep patterns. A lot of research is aiming to find the links between arthritis, obesity, metabolic disease, and heart disease. As can be seen in this series on obesity, research into Bacillus subtilis (Natto) has shown benefits for all these conditions.

Medication for joint pain can be expensive and there are side effects to many anti-inflammatory medications. Any long-term medication needs to be monitored by your prescribing vet.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) may also be beneficial for joint health where breakdown products of HA are inflammatory. Research has shown HA given by mouth is absorbed and enters the joints of dogs. Dynavyte Pets new product Dancing Dog is an oral HA, and should be on the market this June.

Vitamin K2 was shown to benefit people with rheumatoid arthritis in 2017. Vitamin K2 is produced by Bacillus subtilis (Natto).

Bacillus subtilis (Natto) can reduce inflammation around the body as many studies have shown.
